One of the easiest & most dramatic changes to a home: "The Fireplace"
Do you have a Fireplace that just screams 1970's? Back then, it was popular and economical for the builder to cover the wall of your fireplace with the leftover trim bricks of your home. In the 80's, Fireplace Inserts were all the rage, once again leading contractors to obtain closely matching "Bricks" and affix them to your wall. Nowadays, most homebuyers receive in their builder package a simple fireplace insert; typically, the shop that makes your cabinets nails up a handful of scrap trim and paints it white, then the floor guy lays 3 to 6 tiles on your floor as a hearth.
Sometimes the builder's definition of "custom" can include a mortared box of flag or creek rock. The problem is that it just doesn't look real. The look they are attempting to achieve is foiled by the oversized grout joints where non-forming rocks are used to just "cover the wall." Wouldn't you rather create the look that a stone mason meticulously spent days cutting each and every piece just for you?
Beware of the new wave of synthetic "culture stone" sold online and at many popular home stores. These cultured stones are now being stuck on any surface mostly by untrained contractors. The problem with that is similar to the problem with the bricks...standardized coloring that you will have to decorate AROUND instead of WITH. Also, those stones will come down as your home shifts. All homes move. It is completely dependent on how your home was constructed as to whether your home develops problems such as slab cracks, wall cracks, windows and doors sticking, etc; your veneer stone may eventually pop off the wall. And the mess! Here is the process to have someone come to your home and do a veneer stone fireplace makeover: 1) They must remove everything on wall. 2) They must put metal lathe (diamond wire) on your wall. 3) They must put up a scratch coat of mortar over the entire surface and wire. 4) Then they install the stone just like ceramic tile. 5) Then they come back and grout. This can very easily take up to 5 days for an inferior mass-produced product, which is only slightly better than what you already had for a very expensive price.
HOWEVER...what if you could pick a style, a period, just for your room? A Tuscan feel? A German castle? What about a Roman Marble one-off piece? What if you could have a mantle that not just anyone could buy out of a magazine? Something that says "YOU." Any style stone, any pattern, any coloration, combined with the ability to have wooden pieces incorporated...aesthetically pleasing. Let your new piece take you to your happy place as you savor your first or final cup of coffee of the day.
Rest assured, at WoodStone we do not duplicate exact copies of what we make. You will never walk into your friends home and see "YOUR" counter, sink, fireplace, backsplash, cabinet, etc.
